A shield for the moments that matter most
A physician-owned, freestanding outpatient center for diagnostic and therapeutic GI procedures – built by the same physicians who founded Merus Gastroenterology, in Cumming, Georgia.
About Aegis Endoscopy
Named for the shield. Built for protection.
Aegis takes its name from the shield — a symbol of protection. We chose it because that is what a procedure center should be: a place where you are looked after completely, from the moment you arrive to the moment you go home.
Aegis is a direct extension of Merus Gastroenterology — designed by the same physicians, held to the same standards, and built around the same conviction: that how you are cared for matters as much as what is done. The center will be accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC) and certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Every procedure is performed by a board-certified gastroenterologist using advanced Fujifilm ELUXEO imaging technology.
Located in Cumming, GA, Aegis serves patients across Johns Creek, Suwanee, Duluth, Alpharetta, Milton, Buford, Gwinnett, and the greater North Atlanta area. Referrals are welcome, and self-referrals for screening colonoscopy are accepted.
Procedures We Perform
Outpatient GI procedures, done right
All procedures at Aegis are performed on an outpatient basis. Most patients are home within two to three hours of arrival.
Colonoscopy
The gold standard for colorectal cancer screening and the early detection of polyps, inflammation, and other conditions of the large intestine. We use Fujifilm ELUXEO technology with AI-assisted polyp detection to ensure the highest standard of diagnostic accuracy.
Upper Endoscopy (EGD)
Examines the esophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine. Used to evaluate symptoms including reflux, heartburn, difficulty swallowing, nausea, and abdominal pain.
Additional GI procedures are available based on clinical need and physician recommendation. Please contact us or speak with your Merus physician to learn whether a specific procedure is performed at Aegis.
What to Expect
Your procedure day, from start to finish
We want your procedure day to be as smooth and stress-free as possible. Here is everything you need to know from the day before through your recovery.
01
Before Your Procedure
Your Merus physician or referring provider will give you specific preparation instructions tailored to your procedure. Please follow them carefully – incomplete preparation can affect the quality and safety of your procedure and may require rescheduling.
For colonoscopy, you will follow a bowel preparation protocol in the day or days before your procedure. If you have questions about your prep, call us before the day of your procedure, not the morning of. For upper endoscopy, you will be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a specific number of hours beforehand.
What to Bring
A valid photo ID and insurance card, a list of current medications with dosages, any completed intake or consent forms, and a responsible adult who will drive you home and stay with you.
What Not to Bring
Valuables, jewelry, or large amounts of cash, and contact lenses – you’ll be asked to remove them. You will not be permitted to drive yourself home under any circumstances following sedation.
02
The Day of Your Procedure
Plan to arrive 60 minutes before your scheduled time. You’ll be greeted, checked in, and taken to a private preparation area, where a registered nurse reviews your medical history, confirms medications, and places an IV for sedation. You’ll speak with your physician before the procedure begins.
Most procedures take 20 to 45 minutes, followed by monitored recovery as sedation wears off — most patients are ready to leave within 30 to 60 minutes. The entire visit, check-in to check-out, may take up to 3 to 3½ hours. Before you leave, your physician will speak with you directly about what was found and any next steps, and you’ll receive a written summary. Full pathology results, if applicable, typically return within five to seven business days.
03
After Your Procedure
Plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Do not drive, operate machinery, make significant decisions, or sign legal documents for 24 hours following sedation. Most patients return to normal activities the following day. Mild bloating or discomfort after a colonoscopy is normal and typically resolves within a few hours.
Contact us or go to your nearest emergency room immediately if you experience severe abdominal pain, significant rectal bleeding, fever above 101°F, or prolonged nausea or vomiting.
For non-urgent questions after your procedure, contact Merus Gastroenterology at 770 400 0828 or Info@merusgastro.com.
